(Scroll down for video) A Jewish Republican assemblyman was arrested and charged with drug possession related charges after he was caught speeding down a highway in New York, according to police reports in New York.

The Republican state assemblyman who voted against legalizing medical marijuana in 2011 was arrested for possession of marijuana yesterday, State Police announced today.

Steve Katz, who compared Sheldon Silver to Penn State football coach Joe Paterno for taking a bribe to settle allegations of sexual harassment against Assemblyman Vito Lopez, was arrested after speeding on the highway on the way to Albany yesterday morning.

The trooper smelled marijuana and Katz, 59, handed over a small bag of weed, state police said.
Katz, a veterinarian with a practice in Yorktown and in the Bronx who lost his license last year, was elected with the support of the Tea Party in 2010 despite reports of federal and state tax liens, charges of animal abuse and settlement of a sexual harassment lawsuit in his private practice.

State Police arrested Katz around 10:00 am after he was caught doing 80 miles per hour in a 65 mph zone.
The trooper smelled marijuana.
“Katz was cooperative and gave the officer a bag of marijuana," police spokesperson Darcy Wells, said.
Katz was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view
