The world of Muay Thai kickboxing has an unlikely champion in Sara Abraham, an Indian immigrant who lives in the Israeli city of Kiryat Arba.
The 18-year-old won the championship of the 132 to 138 pounds match, in the 16 to 19 age group, despite her strict religious upbringing, which generally prohibits her to contact members of the opposite sex.
Abraham was born to a Hindu father and Christian mother in India, but the family converted to Judaism in 2005. After the terrorist attacks in Mumbai, which left the rabbi who had converted them dead, the family moved to Israel.
Abraham said that the Jewish religion provides the necessary components needed to succeed in the sport. She noted that prayer and dietary laws helps her a lot.
As a student at a religious girls school, Abraham said she was initially concerned about the participation in the sport, but after winning the world championship, she was pleasantly surprised by the response she received from her peers.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view
