An elderly woman was tragically killed after her own car ran her over in front of a school, according to a statement released by police in Texas.
The woman, 67-years-old, was killed Thursday morning when she was run over by her own car, police said.
Isabel Fuerta was driving north between Blanco Road and Sir Winston Churchill High School at around 6:00 am when she pulled over on the right shoulder of the road, stopped her beige 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser and left the vehicle.
The PT Cruiser suddenly began traveling back down the street and the car ran over her, police said.
A passerby managed to track down Fran McLaughlin, who is a nurse at Methodist Hospital, and was on her way to work.
McLaughlin called police and said the fire department firefighters arrived soon thereafter. The rescue workers used a jack to lift up the PT Cruiser. They performed CPR in an attempt to save Fuerta.
She died at the scene.
"I feel sorry for the family," McLaughlin said.
"There are several theories circulating why she got out of the car," Sergeant Javier Salazar, one of the officers on the scene said.
The case is still under investigation, he said.
