(Scroll down for video) A woman jumped to her death from a high rise apartment building together with her baby, but miraculously the baby survived, according to police reports in New York City.
The woman, who was a Manhattan lawyer tied her 10-month-old son to her chest and jumped to her death from an eighth floor window in the Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan, on Wednesday, and the baby miraculously survived suffering just few scratches, police sources said.
Cynthia Wachenheim, 44, who left a suicide note chastising herself for being a bad mother, landed on her back after the fateful jump. Her baby was in a harness. He bounced off his mom on impact and then started crawling away.
"I heard a scream when she was in the air," witness Steven Dominguez, 18, said. "I noticed something falling, but I did not want to believe it was a person," he added.
Dominguez, who teared up as he spoke, said the landing was a terrible noise.
"It was a loud bang," he said outside the building on Bradhurst Ave near West 147th St. "It sounded like a big piece of wood hitting the floor," he said.
"As I approached, I saw the baby crying," he said.
The baby was in stable condition Wednesday night at Harlem Hospital, hours after his mother’s jump.
Sources said Wachenheim left a rambling 13-page suicide note written by hand in small pages of notebook paper.
Police learned, not from the notes, that Wachenheim was convinced that her baby had cerebral palsy, but doctors said there was nothing wrong with him, the source said.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view
