A new Amy Winehouse exhibition opened which celebrates her Jewish roots.
The family of Amy Winehouse is hopeful that the new exhibition will see Amy reclaim her name as a typical Jewish girl from North London.
Amy’s older brother, Alex Winehouse and his wife, Riva, collaborated with the Jewish Museum in Camden and gave unprecedented access to the belongings of Amy, including her guitar, her collection of books, and a vintage bar of her former home.
The exhibit, presented on what would have been her 30th birthday, will also include family photographs, including the ceremony of her brother's bar mitzvah, Friday night dinner, and her grandmother Cynthia, who was a big influence on Amy. Amy even got a tattoo on her arm dedicated to her grandmother.
Alex Winehouse said: "Amy was a person who was very proud of her London Jewish roots. We were not religious, but we were traditional. Hopefully, the world will get to see the Jewish side of Amy."
“We all know that Amy Winehouse was a great singer. What people did not know is that Amy was dedicated to the Jewish community, and this is what the exhibit is all about,” Geneva Wilkerson, 21, of London, England told YourJewishNews.com after learning about the new exhibit.
Abigail Morris, executive director of the museum, said: "Amy Winehouse was an immensely talented, iconic and inspirational singer, and she was a Jewish girl from North London."
