(Scroll down for video) A woman was arrested after she slapped an officer across the face in an attempt to be arrested and jailed.
Etta Lopez, 31, of Sacramento, California took an extreme measure in an attempt to quit smoking, she got herself arrested.
According to Deputy Matt Campoy, who was slapped, her reasoning was that in jail she will be forced to be without cigarettes thereby helping her to “quit cold turkey.”
According to police, Lopez sat outside the jail for a long time waiting for an officer to exit the building. According to officer Campoy, the woman purposely blocked his way as he left his shift at the Sacramento County Jail. "Suddenly, she came at me and slapped me in the face. It was totally unprovoked," Deputy Campoy said.
Lopez allegedly admitted she was sitting in front of the county jail for hours with the intention of assaulting an officer to be arrested and put in prison, where she would have to stop smoking cigarettes.
“There are many products to help people stop smoking, such as nicotine patches or gum. She could have gotten support from anti-smoking groups to help her stop smoking. Slapping anyone especially an officer is a bad idea,” Steven Clark, 45, of San Diego, California told YourJewishNews.com after hearing about Lopez’s unique way to quit smoking.
"I have not heard of anything like that before," Kimberly Bankston-Lee with an anti-smoking group called Breathe California said.
