New luxury prison in Spain
By: Eva Fett

If you were wondering what Spain is doing with their recent bailout cash, wonder no more.

Spain announced that it will be building fully equipped luxury prisons for criminals, including flat screen TVs and indoor swimming pools.
The Spanish Interior Minister however, questioned plans for the luxury prisons.

Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz addressed Congress on Wednesday, and questioned the plans for the luxurious San Sebastian prison, located in Basque Country.

"It is not reasonable," he said. "The prison must implement services that help retrain and reintegrate inmates into society, not providing them with hotel type luxury," he added.
The official said the project will soon be completed at a cost of $11 million.

“This is the most outrageous thing I have ever heard. Why are criminals being rewarded for their criminal activity, while law abiding citizens have no money to pay for monthly bills? The government is encouraging people to break the law in order to be able to land in the luxury hotel prison,” Alice Howell, 27, of Madrid, Spain told YourJewishNews.com after learning about the new luxury prisons in Spain.

Joseba Agirretxea, a Basque Nationalist Party lawmaker criticized plans to cut the prison budget from $148 million to $91.7 million.
