Student throwing sandwich at Prime Minister Gillard |
(Scroll down for video) A student was caught on video throwing a sandwich at the Australian Prime Minister during a visit to school, according to video uploaded to the internet.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard said that she saw the sandwich attack at a school in Queensland as a laughing matter, but offered no special pardon to the kid.
Kyle Thomson, 16, has been suspended for 15 days after being accused of throwing the sandwich, while a group of students mobbed the Prime Minister.
Kyle said that he was not the one throwing the sandwich, and said he was trying to hit the sandwich out of the hand of another student.
"I would like to say I'm sorry to the prime minister," Thomson said during an interview with the prime minister.
Gillard, who was surprised by the call of the college student during the live interview, laughed.
When asked whether she would forgive Kyle, who has been suspended for his actions, Gillard said no.
"I can’t tell the school principal what to do,”
Gillard said.
"I would not want to undermine the authority of the principal," she added.
"I have not seen the sandwich in the air," she said.
"I did see half a sandwich on the floor,” she added.
Kyle was one of the many teenagers who surrounded Julia Gillard during a visit to Marsden State High School, south of Brisbane, yesterday morning.
While speaking to students, the sandwich was launched in the direction of Gillard, flying past her and hitting another student.
A teacher said that Kyle was the one who threw the sandwich and was later suspended for 15 days.
But Kyle has denied the allegations, claiming instead that he tried to stop another student from throwing the sandwich.
"I hit the sandwich out of the boy's hand because he wanted to throw it," he said.
“This silly act of one student has been blown way out of proportion. The sandwich did not even hit the Prime Minister, so she should act like an adult and not like a big baby,” Tracy Brooks, 26, of Melbourne, Australia told YourJewishNews.com after watching the sandwich being thrown on video.
Kyle's mother believes that her son is being unfairly blamed for the incident.
"Kyle is no angel, do not get me wrong, but I think there is more to the story," she said.
She continued by saying that the incident had been blown out of proportion.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view
