Elisangela Borborema Rosa |
A woman miraculously survived despite the fact that her husband stabbed her in the mouth with a harpoon, according to a statement released by hospital officials in Brazil.
The woman, 28-years-old, was accidentally shot in the mouth by her husband.
The Health Department of Rio de Janeiro, said in a statement that the woman's husband was cleaning his gun when it fired a harpoon which struck the woman’s cervical spine.
Elisangela Borborema Rosa was rushed to a hospital and underwent emergency surgery after the incident on Monday in the coastal city of Arraial do Cabo.
The statement cites neurosurgeon Allan da Costa as saying that the spear came within 1 centimeter of killing the woman. He said he expects the woman to make a full recovery.
A police officer in Arrial do Cabo, said that authorities are investigating the case.
"Everything indicates that it was an accident, but we are investigating. We do not think the husband tried to kill her," the official said.
"Once the woman fully recovers we plan to ask her questions and get a clearer picture of what happened," the officials added.
“This woman is extremely lucky, as rarely does someone survive such an attack. I hope the woman is smart enough to prohibit her husband from touching guns for the rest of his life,” Robin Gray, 41, of Scottsdale, Arizona told YourJewishNews.com after learning about the woman.
This is not the first time someone who was shot in the head with a harpoon survived. As we reported earlier, A fisherman is lucky to be alive after he accidentally shot himself in the face with a spear.
The Brazilian fisherman who accidentally shot a spear through his face, survived with minimal brain damage, and did not even bother to seek medical attention for more than 10 hours after the incident.
Bruno Barcellos de Souza Coutinho, 34, was cleaning his equipment when the gun suddenly discharged, sending a foot-long spear about six inches into his skull, according to officials at Hospital Santa Teresa.
Instead of rushing to the hospital, Souza Coutinho apparently decided to relax at home and let the wounds heal on its own, which led to his aunt calling the fire department.
Souza Coutinho was completely conscious when he arrived at the hospital, despite having the spear piercing in his left eye, crushing his skull and lodging itself in his brain millimeters away from vital arteries. He underwent emergency surgery on Monday and lost sight in his left eye due to the misfortune.
“This man is extremely fortunate to be alive. Not many people can survive a spear through the head. However, had he not waited 10 hours to seek medical attention, doctors might have been able to save his sight in his left eye. People should learn from this and seek medical attention immediately,” Stephanie Philpis, 56, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma told YourJewishNews.com after learning about the fisherman.
He remains in the intensive care unit of the hospital, and now learned to seek medical attention the next time he manages to survive a near-fatal accident.
